Chapter 3

Integration

Many quantities are known locally, but the question we care about concerns the whole. A changing rate tells us what is contributed near each point, but not by itself what all those contributions add up to. How can we gather them into one total? Integration answers this question by accumulating contributions across an interval. We’ll build the integral from finite and infinitesimal pieces, then connect accumulation to the derivative rules we already know.
